Dispatch from the Good Friday Relays

By Rachel Smith

“It’d be a shame if we couldn’t get a full relay team” was the main motivating thought behind my participation in the Good Friday Relays this year. Otherwise, I might have assumed that it wasn’t the kind of event I could take part in; I’d never done a relay before and the thought was a little intimidating. I had thought about putting my name forward originally and then got into a right flap about it (shocker). I’m glad I pushed through when I heard a space had opened up.

First of all, the bad: it was an appalling distance to pace, (3k?? Absolutely shan), and not sure I ever really got in gear. But that’s really it – and even that is an argument to go back and give it another punt next year.

The rest of the day was a fun and uplifting experience. Much like XC, it was a celebration of North East running played out in a variety of colourful club vests, worn by people of all ages and experience. There wasn’t a typical runner or team. Yes, admittedly there are those runners who look like they’re on x2 speed, but you get to enjoy spectating as they complete the course in about 45 seconds.

Best of all? Well, that has to be the DVRC radgies giving you a cheer as you pass each other and as you cross the finish line! You can’t beat that club spirit!

If that doesn’t convince you, then the knowledge that the team brought backpack full of creme eggs will surely be more persuasive. Not only do you start your long Easter weekend with your team cheering you in, but you also get chocolate treats. Not really sure what could be better.
